CMPA Christmas
A cows milk protein allergy Christmas
I loved dairy before we went dairy free it made up about 60% of my diet! So being dairy free was challenging.
Now Christmas is upon us an I was dreading it all the delicious treats I would not be able to eat! But fear not I have a few tips to help CMPA sufferers through the festive period.
We had our Christmas early so I have complied a list of things that are good substitutes ( I say good because it’s never going to be the same as the real thing). Also things to avoid during the festive period.
Christmas dinner
Starter
I made tomato soup to start, that way we could all eat it and I may my own bread rolls (tomato soup & rolls recipe is in my highlights on Instagram - but it you don’t want to make rolls you can always buy half baked dinner rolls from Morrison’s you just pop them in the oven for 10 mins the are delicious I have also tried them and they are dairy & soy free).
Parma ham and melon is also a nice easy to prepare stater.
Main
Things to look out for : some turkey is based in butter, gravy granules tend to have soy in - I haven’t found one without. So making your own gravy is a must!
I based my turkey with vegan butter and covered in bacon to keep it moist. (I hate the word but there wasn’t an alternative).
On to one of the most important elements of Christmas dinner if you have time to make stuffing I applaud you but I haven’t so I bought paxo stuffing and poured boiling water in (sage an onion) - dairy & soy free and delicious.
Mash - I boiled my pots like normal added vegan butter and a dash on oat milk and no one tasted the difference. I did the same with the carrot and turnip.
Roasties were meant to be cooked in goose fat but after the dish smashed it ended up being in oil (again dairy & soy free).
THE GRAVY- I made myself with the juice from the meat a drop of red wine and a oxo cube (reduced salt) and some corn flower - make sure you check the sock cube too as some contain soy!
Beef - top side I slow cooked that in wine & stock for about 5 hours.
The most important course ...
Pudding!!
I used the Yule log cup cakes from Morrison’s an substituted the ingredients for dairy free ones ie vegan butter & oat milk.
I also made a raspberry, blueberry and coconut ice cream.
My family actually couldn’t tell the difference and we’re shocked to know they all had a dairy free Christmas dinner too not just me and the baby.
Other dairy free delights during the festive period include:
Almond Baileys - although don’t make a baileys coffee with it as it curdles.
Mulled wine is mostly dairy & soy free just double check.
Chocolate almond milk - from M&S.
Chocolate oat milk - Oatley (good for increasing breast milk supply for BF mamas - I found it anyway).
Moo free Christmas chocolate trees - Holland & Barrett.
Crumpets - Warburton’s.
Betty Crocker’s devils food cake.
Betty Crocker’s butter cream style icing.
Chicken Christmas trees from Lidl.
Chocolate churros from Aldi.
Jam donuts from co-op.
Yum yums from Asda.
Most clear spirts such as vodka, brandy whiskey not including liquor such as baileys and others.
Things to be aware of :
Wine - sneaky I know!! Lots of wine contains dairy so be careful always check the label.
Gravy & stock - nearly all gravy has soy in but only some stocks.
Cross contamination from other peoples foods so just be vigilant if someone else is making your Christmas dinner kindly ask them to use different utensils when cooking I’m sure they won’t mind.
