Surviving the pox!
How to survive the chicken pox:
Disclaimer: I’m writing this as a mum, not a nurse & if you are worried then you should get in touch with the relevant health care provider/ GP or pharmacist!
Also a big thank you to my followers who have helped me along the way with your tips & tricks I thought I would share them all!
Getting them comfortable:
1st of all calpol (paracetamol) is a life saver so get that in plenty of that in!
Vira soothe : is great on spots (stops the itching and reduces scarring).
Bicarbonate soda : in the bath also helps.
Piriton : also stops the itching & helps with sleeping.
Don’t give:
Ibruprofen- NHS website advises against it.
Calamine lotion : apparently it doesn’t work aswell as they thought years ago (personal choice though).
Bathing:
We usually bath & hair wash every day however. With my little one having chicken pox in her hair I reduced the hair washing as it was irritating her scalp and spots.
Also I stopped the bubble bath & shower gel - and like I said before bicarbonate soda.
I found a luke warm bath rather than warm water also helped and reducing the time in the bath we usually spend ages playing and splashing but literally it was an in and out job - (purely to stop the itching).
Clothing:
I found covering as much of her body as possible was the best as then she wouldn’t be tempted to scratch- (as much).
As we were mostly in the house using pj’s were great and they are cotton (again reducing irritation).
If we did go out try an put on mainly cotton clothing.
Quarantine :
So basically the rule is until the the spots stop coming out usually 5-7 days you have to stay away from other people (play groups/ nursery & school). As it is very contagious and can be detrimental to people with low immune systems (such as pregnant ladies, babies and the elderly).
So your little one maybe feeling under the weather & not up for much activity. However this was not the case with my little one.
Indoor activities:
As my little one had no interest in relaxing on the couch. (We are usually out at least one a day to the park/ on walk/ going swimming or ballet). So I knew this was going to be a challenge.
Baking - making special treats for us to eat is tasty, educational and a skill for the future so we done a lot of baking.
Colouring and painting.
Reading story’s (usually the same story a good 10 times before I can persuade her to change to another book).
Building blocks
& of course watching Peter Rabbit on a loop for a week! (I actually think I could relay the film word for word).
Outdoor activities:
It’s not all bad news you can leave the house just try not to be in close proximity to others.
Out door playing in the garden: water play and digging. (Although it is super cold at the moment and the water play may be frozen over).
Beaches - We went to Formby pine woods looking for squirrels and lots of fresh air and running round -(but that was what I did my little one sat on my shoulders 99% of the way round).
Fairy Glen - in Wigan is a great place again lots of walking and streams and trying to find the fairy dust and little fairy doors was a great outdoor activity that didn’t involve being to close to others.
Food:
Lots of easy to eat food helps especially if the chicken pox are in the mouth it may be uncomfortable for them to eat or swallow.
Lots of fruit like melon, pears bananas although I would stay away from citrus fruits (incase they sting).
Soups - are a great filler (with some dunked in bread an butter) easy to eat with good nutritional value.
Slow cooked Scouse & stews are along the same lines (not difficult to swallow & not spicy).
Ice cream is always a winner in our house too and it may also help easing the soreness in the mouth.
If you are a more health conscious parent maybe frozen fruit (ie melon).
Milkshakes are great (to fill little tummies which may be uninterested again you can make them as healthy or unhealthy as you like).
Anyway thanks for reading & hope this has helped some of you! Feel free to share & if anyone has other tips please message me and I will amend the blog
